Training Sites

One of the strengths of our adult psychiatry training program at UMMC is being able to work, teach and care for patients in a world-class medical center. In addition, we have the oldest medical school in the Deep South which affords further academic opportunities for our residents.

University of Mississippi Medical Center

As the primary site for our residency training program, UMMC is Mississippi's main teaching hospital. Residents have the opportunity to care for psychiatric patients on two inpatient units: our general psychiatry unit, 7 West, and our medical psychiatry unit, 7 East. Residents also rotate through our consultation liaison service conducting assessments of medical and surgical patients. Residents are exposed to child psychiatry through our child inpatient unit, 3 Circle. The primary outpatient treatment location is the Adult Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic, located at the Jackson Medical Mall, which is a general outpatient psychiatry clinic.

A broad spectrum of psychiatric disease is seen by these services due to UMMC's strategic location as a major referral center for the Jackson metropolitan area and further Deep South. Being the only academic medical center in the state means that patients are often referred to UMMC when usual treatment has failed, which provides residents with an opportunity to not only see a broad range of psychiatric illness, but also the opportunity to actively treat patients with severe mental illness. Our residents are able to treat a diverse population of patients that is truly representative of the population of the state of Mississippi.

G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery VA Center

Situated off Woodrow Wilson in Jackson, the VA hospital is an acute care hospital. Here, residents rotate on psychiatry inpatient, neurology, and internal medicine rotations, as well as care for patients in the outpatient setting. The VA has active programs where many of our residents get their substance abuse and addiction experiences. Residents are also able to gain exposure to community services such as telepsychiatry and Mental Health Intensive Case Management, a program which provides case management and psychiatric services in a patient's own home through a traveling team of providers. Rotations through the VA system allow residents to develop an appreciation and understanding of issues unique to the veteran patient population.

Baptist Medical Center

Baptist Medical Center has served Mississippi since 1911. Our residents gain experience in geriatric psychiatry in the Baptist Medical Center's geriatric psychiatry unit, which takes a team-based approach to the treatment of geriatric psychiatry patients.

Sleep Disorder Center

The Sleep Disorders Center at UMMC provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluation of persons with suspected sleep disorders and the full range of treatments available to reverse or improve diagnosed sleep disorders. The center has the longest-standing accreditation in Mississippi by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). Here, our residents are able to gain an appreciation for the critical role that sleep can play in many psychiatric disorders and the complexities inherent in the diagnosis of sleep disorders.

Pine Grove Behavioral Health and Addiction Services

Established in 1984 in Hattiesburg, Miss., Pine Grove provides inpatient psychiatric treatment for adults and children as well as multiple addiction treatment programs, both residential and outpatient.
